Help Me, Help You... Solve Your Own Problems

Leadership and Problem Solving

Leaders often spend their days solving problems. But here’s the question one client asked recently: “How can I help people solve their own problems instead?”

Helping people solve their own problems isn’t just a time-saver—it’s a confidence builder. It allows others to grow and develop their critical thinking skills. It’s a win-win.

A Coaching Approach

Next time someone brings you a problem, try this coaching-based prompt:

"Make a list for each of these questions. See how it helps you gain more clarity and ideas."

Ask them:

  • What ideas do you already have?

  • What decisions need to be made?

  • Who should you talk to?

  • What questions are surfacing?

  • What do you need to explore or learn?

Then say:

"Once you’ve reviewed your lists, pick the first 1–3 steps to take. I’m here if you need help."

You’ll be surprised how often people figure it out on their own—and grow in the process.
